April is Autism Awareness Month
WHAT IS AUTISM?

Autism is a severe lifelong developmental disability thats typically appears during the first 3 years of life. It's a neurological disorder that affects the brain, interfering with normal development in the ares of social interation and communication. Children and adults with Autism typically have
difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction and
leisure or play activities. This disorder makes it difficult for them
to communicate with the outisde world. Most people with Autism
will never marry, have a job or even live independently.

  • Over half of all children with Autism will never learn to speak

  • Autism is four times more prevalent in boys that girls
    which means that 1 in every 94 boys will have Autism

  • In 1995 the rate of Autism was 1 in 2,500 now it's 1 in 110

  • There are over 27,000 people in Wisconsin alone living with Autism
